Use of Triple-Exposure X-ray Computed Tomography for Nondestructive Identification of Heavy Elements in Soil Samples

چکیده

For the purpose of nondestructive measurements hazardous heavy-element-containing substances in soil samples, emerging technique, triple-exposure X-ray computed tomography (CT), is proposed. The use triple exposure (i.e. three different acceleration voltages for tube) improves accuracy identification atomic number a heavy element. With lead as target element, virtual microtomography simulations utilizing polychromatic source accelerated at 70, 100, and 140 kV were performed. CT images reconstructed on computer clayey samples with natural minerals, namely galena (PbS), witherite (BaCO3), stibnite (Sb2S3), sphalerite (ZnS), magnetite (Fe3O4). Quantitative analysis was performed to obtain following results. (i) Galena can be distinguished from other minerals witherite, stibnite, sphalerite, magnetite). (ii) content estimated reasonable accuracy. These successful results demonstrate that technique promising characterization contaminated elements such lead.

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

X-ray computed tomography.

X-ray computed tomography (CT), introduced into clinical practice in 1972, was the first of the modern slice-imaging modalities. To reconstruct images mathematically from measured data and to display and to archive them in digital form was a novelty then and is commonplace today. CT has shown a steady upward trend with respect to technology, performance and clinical use independent of predictio...

Impact of Photon Spectra on the Sensitivity of Polymer Gel Dosimetry by X-Ray Computed Tomography

Introduction: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of X-ray spectra on the sensitivity of a polymer gel dosimeter imaged with a conventional computed tomography (CT) scanner. Material and Methods: The whole process of CT imaging of an irradiated polymer gel was simulated by MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. The imaging of polyacrylamide gel was accomplished by means of a co...

Empirical correlation for porosity deduction from X-ray computed tomography (CT)

For obtaining reservoir petrophysical properties, for example porosity, non-destructive methods such as X-ray computed tomography, CT, seems to be precise and accurate. Porosity is deducted from the CT image with a single scan via different techniques, such as pore space detection by image segmentation techniques then correlation with porosity. More than one hundred samples with carbonate li...

An iterative method to estimate x-ray attenuation coefficients in computed tomography

Introduction: The basis of image formation in Computed Tomography (CT) lies in the x-ray linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material. Compton scattering and photoelectric effect are the dominant interactions of the x-ray photons with the subject, in the range of diagnostic radiology. These two coefficients are important in tissue characterization by Dual-Energy CT (D...
